Anna Schuleit installed thousands of flowers in the Massachusetts Mental Health Center to commemorate its life, history, and people over the 91 years of its operation.

It looks so cool but creepy at the same time considering that it’s a mental institution. -mp

“Considering it’s a mental institution”? What is that supposed to mean?

Mental health institutions are in no way creepy. It frustrates me that so much of our media portrays them that way. I worked a late night shift in one and never felt on edge or creeped out (except AFTERWARDS when I drove home and walked back to my apartment from the parking garage. They really need to fix that flickering light by the elevators, man!) Everyone I met there was absolutely lovely. The children on my unit were bright and so full of life and being there to witness even just a glimpse of their recovery was so enlightening.

Mental health patients suffer from diseases that have biological basis. Many of them are afraid to seek help because of the stigmas associated with their disease. I think it’s really important to be careful about feeding into stereotypes, even if you meant no harm.

Anyway, this is really beautiful.

An example of over-thinking what I posted. I agree with you…that’s why I posted this in the first place. If it was any other hospital - I would’ve thought of the same thing… “creepy.” Why? Flowers connotate death in my mind especially when paired next to or within something juxtaposed.  It’s almost like a Tim Burton film where the white balance is more grayscale and all of a sudden a splash of color. That’s what my adjective “creepy” is defined in my mind, at least.

Look, I don’t undermine people who suffer from mental illness of any kind ‘cause I, after all, have suffered from depression. So please don’t assume anything either. Thank you.
